The Last Negative
The final frame
I developed the roll myself in the NYU darkroom. The final frame was a self-portrait: a man with a bruised face and defiant eyes, holding a piece of paper.
Scrawled in grease pencil:
“Hải is watching. Trust the negative.”
The man was Jörg Nachtnebel. The message was written fifty years ago. And somehow, it was waiting for me.
“I think he knew someone would find the camera. I think he left that note for whoever was brave enough to develop the film.”
